Frankly, it’s a bit of a crutch to help out people who weren’t specific enough in their original searches. If they were more specific, they’d see pages from deep within sites on their SERPs.

Yeah, I noticed the directions box too Paul. More searches are being evaluated for context by the show of these two features from Google.

I guess I have seen it, but admittedly haven’t looked into it or looked at reactions to it. It looks like that U of M link provides a similar search link that gives you directions to it. I’m liking that!

You bet Ed. I figured you or Paul would have some insight on this. I can see some of the downside items to this, but I would think this is a result of user research and something Google put a lot of thought into. Seems like a great feature as a searcher.

I’m left wondering what the credentials are to apply this feature to a result. Google used NASA as an example.

Nice write-up, and thanks for the link. Here is Google's take on why they've introduced this. Not everyone is impressed. The biggest complainers have been sites that think they'll lose on page impressions if Google helps people get directly to what they're looking for rather than hitting their site's homepage, then searching within their site.
